Sermon Discussion | 1st Corinthians: Part 24 - 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 14:26-37Main Idea: A maturing church will practice order when worshipping together 4 Observations about Women being silent:1 - It is in reference to the church gathering2 - His teaching is addressing a disorder problem3 - The instruction to be silent has to do with submission  4 - It is addressing the practice of prophecyJason Wing Conclusion:women being silent in church means women are to refrain from judging or speaking an authoritative word of prophecy to the assembled churchQuestions to Consider:1 - Will you pray for God to purify the disordered church?2 - Will you pray for orderly, Spirit-led worship gatherings in our church? QUESTIONS: We had a few people send in one question, but then one person sent in a bunch of questions (some of which were based on last week’s sermon). So, in order to work through them in a way that has one concept build on the next, we are going to take the many questions sent by one person and mix them in with the others.  Where does your definition of Prophecy come from?  If prophecy isn't "speaking forth the Word/preaching" and it isn't "foretelling the future," how is it different from discernment where we are sensitive to the Holy Spirit leading us to encourage, exhort, rebuke?  When I say that the Lord stirred me to pray for you, is that a prophecy? Or when I sense that one of my kids is wrestling with a heart issue, is asking about that prophecy?  Could you give more specific examples of what it is/isn't?  Church culture has such a wide range of definitions and that is probably skewing my ideas (words of knowledge, dreams and visions).1 Corinthians 11 implies that women can prophecy as long as their heads are covered, also Acts 2 and Acts 21. Can women prophesy in the church today? If women cannot do this in a church setting, then where can they?  Two people asked very similar questions. Let’s combine them here. Person 1 asks - Since Paul says that women with the gift of prophecy shouldn't speak in the church assembly, could you clarify under what circumstances a women with the gift of prophecy would be allowed to use her gift? Person 2 asks -  If women are to refrain from presenting an authoritative word/prophecy to the assembled church, what are they supposed to do if God gives them a prophetic word? How are they supposed to use their gift?If prophecy isn't preaching, then what is the prohibition besides order?Should women ask their husbands questions at home before coming to ask and elder/pastor/brother about bible teaching?Last week you said prophecy wasn't authoritative or inerrant.  If that's true, then how would a woman prophesying be exercising authority over a man (with the exception of her testing the prophecies to see if they are valid/right/according to Scripture)?A Cessationist argument is that this was the start of the Church (capital C) and they had no Bible and the apostles were still in the process of teaching, so prophecy and speaking in tongues was needed to build the church and authenticate the message along with miracles.  What is the argument that once the all-sufficient Scripture was available, that the gifts continued?  If Scripture is all-sufficient and prophecy must be tested against it, why not just use Scripture? How do we know when we are appropriately being orderly versus putting God in a box with our scheduled service times and programming? I recall some times growing up where "the Spirit moved" and the service (there was only one) became focused on prayer or worship despite the original plan being different.Thank you for listening and sending in your questions. As a reminder you can send your questions to SermonQuestions@ubcbeavercreek.com and we will see you next week.
