October 4, 2026 // 1 Corinthians 13:6
Main Idea: Since God has demonstrated His love toward us, we must act in love toward one another.
Love in Action:
1. Love does not find joy in injustice.
- Those who find joy in injustice oppose and seek to destroy Jesus (Mk 14:11; 15:18; Jn 16:20; Rev 11:10).
- Those who find joy in injustice are blinded by the sinful depravity of this world (Rom 1:18, 29, 32; 2 Pet 2:13, 15).
- Application: Living in an unjust world, we should ...
- rejoice when we are treated unjustly because this mirrors our Lord (Lk 6:23; Ac 5:41; Phil 1:18, 2:17, 18).
- rejoice in suffering because God uses this testimony to strength His church and to make Christ know through us (Col 1:24; 1 Pet 4:13).
2. Love finds joy in the truth.
How the NT speaks of truth:
Truth Defined:
- Jesus is the Truth (Jn 14:6).
- The Spirit is Truth (Jn 14:17, 1 Jn 5:6).
- The Father sends the Spirit of Truth (Jn 15:26).
- The Word of God is Truth (Jn 17:17; 2 Cor 4:2).
- Sin and Sinners seek to suppress the truth (Rom 1:18, 25; 2:8) and stand condemned (2 Thess 2:10–12).
- The Truth of the Gospel is that God’s salvation through His Son’s work is available to any who believe regardless of their ethnicity and religious background (Gal 2:5, 14; Eph 1:13; 2 Thess 2:13).
- The church, made up of the saved followers of Jesus, should be the cornerstone of truth in this world (1 Tim 3:15).
- Application: Rejoicing in Truth in Action:
Pattern your life and choices on the Gospel and Christ’s commands (2 Jn 4–6; 3 Jn 3).
Remain in Christ (2 Jn 9)
Confront the unbeliever with their unbelief (2 Jn 7–11).
Fellowship with and support those who proclaim the Gospel (3 Jn 4–8).
Application Questions:
1. How are the world’s explanation of injustice and biblical injustice similar? How are they different?
2. What are ways that we can take joy in injustice even as believers? Why are we seemingly okay with this?
3. How have you found joy during trials and suffering? Why is it so important for us to do this as believers?
4. How would you define truth? Whom and what does scripture clearly define as truth? What does this indicate about the nature of truth?
5. Why does it seem the church has lost its function as the cornerstone of truth in this world (1 Tim 3:15)? How can it continue to serve as this in the world and in this community?
6. What applications should we draw regarding truth in relation to one another within the body of believers from 2 John 7–11?
