Scripture Reference: 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 Main Idea: A maturing church acts in fitting ways to honor authority-submission structures in the home and the church. Sermon Points: Paul’s Main Argument - When praying or prophesying in a church meeting men should not cover their heads and women should cover their heads as a proper sign of authority and submission. Reason #1 - The husband-wife relationship should reflect the Father-Son relationship with reference to authority Reason #2 - A wife uncovering her head is culturally shameful Reason #3 - A man covering his head instead of a wife covering her head contradicts how God the creator designed men and women Reason #4 - It is a bed testimony to the angels or messengers Reason #5 - Is it s culturally improper Reason #6 - It goes against what Paul and other churches practiced. Application: Dress in culturally appropriate ways when the church gathers to worship Show that God’s design for husbands and wives is beautiful Church leaders, allow men and women to serve in fitting ways Questions: 1. You mention that Paul isn’t addressing women that have lost their hair due to illness - What about a woman who chooses to willfully cut / shave her hair? Is this still a NT cultural thing or something we should apply today? 2. Is it wrong for a man to wear a hat during prayer and while worshiping God? Why do we ask men to take off their hats and not ask women to cover their head during prayer or moments of silence? 3. In point one of the sermon, (That the husband-wife relationship should reflect the Father-Son relationship) we briefly touched on the phrase "the head of Christ is God." Does this mean that God is the head of the Trinity and thus of Christ? Does the Trinity have a hierarchy? 4. How do you discern between what is cultural in scripture and applies only to the culture and what is a command for today? Thank you for listening and sending in your questions.
